RRD-8ANS-WH is the right part for the storage light (Lutron Diagram 2 + white neutral pigtail). DIY is on hold after finding a multi-circuit gang and a dual-breaker lamp path on the right position. Electrician already coming for a new lab 20 A circuit — add the cross-feed check to that visit (do not ignore). What we learned in the field
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Part | Spare RRD-8ANS-WH (8 A lighting/LED). Not fan 2ANF, not companions RD-RD/RD-RS. Not buying ~$250 8S-DV. |
| Old switch | Mechanical SP — only LINE + LOAD on the device. |
| Neutral | Needs a short white pigtail to the same-circuit white bundle (silver terminal on 8ANS). |
| Gang layout | Left two share one breaker. Right is a different circuit. |
| Storage breaker (directory) | Challenger panel · right column · 20 A “East Garage + Storage Lts + Bath” (sticker also lists master/SW bed lights). |
| Dual-breaker finding | A room light controlled from the right gang position stays powered unless two independent breakers are off (lamp test, not a pen tester): 20 A Water Side Landscape and 15 A Living Room Cathy + Hall (bottom floor). Separate singles, no handle tie, different amps. |
Do not ignore the dual-breaker result. A real lamp energized by either of two independent breakers means those circuits can backfeed each other (often a joined hot in a multi-gang or downstream). That defeats “I turned my breaker off.” Have the electrician trace/fix it while already on site for the lab circuit.
Electrician scope (recommended)
- Primary job: new dedicated 20 A circuit for the lab (as planned).
- Add-on (yes — ask): diagnose why Landscape 20 A or Cathy/Hall 15 A alone can keep the same light on; separate any crossed hots/neutrals in the multi-gang; confirm each gang position dies on exactly one breaker.
- Optional same visit: land the spare
RRD-8ANSon the storage SP (Diagram 2) once the box is known-safe — or leave the mechanical switch if time is tight.
Add-on diagnosis is usually cheaper than a second trip. Ignoring a confirmed dual-feed is how someone works “dead” and isn’t.

Safety rules for this gang
- Kill East Garage + Storage… 20 A and any other breaker that still leaves a device in the gang live (at minimum verify Landscape 20 + Cathy/Hall 15 if the right position is involved).
- Meter every yoke — multi-gang ≠ one circuit.
- Neutral pigtail only onto the same-circuit white bundle as the left 8ANS. Never borrow the right circuit’s neutral.
- If left and right neutrals share one nut, stop — electrician fix.
- Do not open the right device to “trace” the dual-feed as a first DIY project.
Install steps (after electrician clears the box)
- Breakers off · whole relevant set · target meters dead.
- Label LINE/LOAD on the old SP.
- Pull SP · bag for rollback.
- White pigtail into same-circuit neutral · tug test.
- Land 8ANS: GND → NEUT → LINE → LOAD.
- Power on · local paddle · check GFCI behavior.
- RA2 program later.
